Thursday 13: Things I Did on Vacation in Columbus, Ohio

July 16, 2009

Columbus, Ohio, may seem like a strange place to have a vacation, but there were lots of interesting things to see and do. We had a great time in Columbus! Here are a few of the highlights:

  1. Saw a real live Komodo Dragon at the Columbus Zoo.  (Truly, it made my day.)  Also saw a koala, orangutans, a nose-picking gorilla,  manatees, a baby elephant, and many more interesting animals.  The zoo has been rated the #1 zoo in America by USA Travel Guide.  I could see why!
  2. Cheered on Sophia when she entered a frog jumping contest at the Dublin OH Frog Jump.  Thankfully, they provided the frog.  Sophia won the first round and advanced to the second but that’s as far as it went.
  3. Strolled through the vendor’s hall and art exhibits at a gaming convention.  Also gawked at all of the… er… interesting people there.
  4. Took a tour of a pottery and learned how the pottery was made.  Bought a gorgeous bowl.
  5. Got to see a show about weather at COSI (Center of Science and Industry). The most exciting part of the show  was when the weather guru made a cloud.
  6. Touched a snake at the Columbus Zoo.  Sophia made me do it.  Ick.
  7. Played miniature golf in black light.  Spent a lot of time trying to figure out how to get a decent picture.  Didn’t quite succeed on that point.
  8. Toured a replica of Columbus’ ship, the Santa Maria.  Was grossed out by the toilet procedures of the day.
  9. Ate lunch at the Surly Girl Saloon… chosen solely for its name.  Unfortunately, they did not sell T-shirts with the name of their establishment.  If they did, I totally would have bought one.
  10. Saw Mario Lopez, who was Grand Marshall of the Red, White & Boom parade.
  11. Figured out how to take good pictures of fireworks.  (The fireworks setting on my camera is worthless.  I used the S setting, which I  think means shutter priority.)
  12. Toured a historic neighborhood called the German Village.
  13. Ate breakfast at Tim Hortons.  Often.  Yumm.

  6. That’s so cool that you made it to the Dublin Frog Jump … tends to be more residents than visitors (just because not too many people outside of Central Ohio know about it). Did you get some pictures of the event? We’d love to see them!
