Not in my universe

August 13, 2008

There was a segment on one of the morning news shows today about “America’s Next Top Model.”  I’ve never seen the show, but the following statement caught my attention:

“… Whitney Thompson was the first ever full-figured model to win the competition.”

They ran a short segment about her, with some brief biographical information, and a few interview clips.  In one of those clips Whitney referred to herself as a “plus size model.”

Nothing wrong with that at all.  HOWEVER (you knew that was coming, didn’t you?) Whitney is a size 10.

Give me a break!  When size 10 is considered “full figured” or “plus size,” then we are in desperate need of a reality check.

(Oh, and PS — according to Wikipedia, Whitney is not only a size 10, she’s a size 10 who is 5’10” tall… which makes her more like the equivalent of a size 6 or 8 to us shorter gals.)

  1. I saw that too and about died! No wonder our youth has such a low self imagine!

  3. I agree! I discovered a cool organization last weekend that promotes learning tools for girls (and women) about different body types and self-esteem building via the greek mythology women. You love the name…Sophiadolls! 🙂
