Update on Sophia

August 23, 2006

We returned last night from our trip to the big city hospital where Sophia had her test done.

The good news is that she has shown significant improvement from last year — going from a grade 4 to a grade 2. The bad news is that we will have to do this again next year so we can continue to monitor her progress.

They had trouble inserting the catheter, which made it a little more difficult than last time (emotionally and physically). I nearly fainted in the examining room and had to ask for a chair so I could sit down. After the test, Sophia was experiencing pain every time she tried to urinate, so she refused to pee… for nearly 24 hours! I was scared we would end up having to take her back to the hospital, but fortunately Tuesday morning she went potty without any discomfort and everything was back to normal.

Trevor was a great sport about being dragged along for this trip. He even helped Sophia pass time in the waiting room by reading her some stories:

And boy, was there a lot of waiting! The test was supposed to be at 11, with an ultrasound at 11:30. I’m not sure what time we actually started with the tests, but it was close to 1:30 when we finally finished, and most of that time was spent waiting. Then we got lunch and headed over to the outpatient center to see the doctor, and we spent another two hours waiting there.

But the wait was worth it, to hear that she’s improved so much, and that if she continues to improve we can consider her cured! Phew!
