Fun at the Fair

July 25, 2006

Last night we went to the state fair. We try to go every year, and nearly forgot that it was going on this year! We didn’t get home until nearly midnight, and I think I can speak for everyone when I say we are wiped out. I’m too tired to write much about it, and still trying to catch up from not having internet access yesterday, so I figured I’d take the easy way out with some photos & captions.

After arriving, we ate some dinner and then headed into the arts & crafts exhibit hall, where they also had displays of flowers and produce. The sunflower was IMHO the prettiest flower there, although I tend to be biased toward sunflowers anyway. Isn’t it just gorgeous?

After that, we headed to the petting zoo. It’s probably the best petting zoo I’ve ever seen, with a wide variety of animals that you can feed and touch and interact with. They had a macaw who is quite chatty and a quick learner. (Trevor taught it to say his name in a few seconds, and when I called to Sophia, “Come here,” the bird repeated it immediately!) They also had some ring tailed lemurs which were fun to watch. If you’ve ever referred to someone as bouncing off the walls… well, these guys actually do bounce off the walls of their cage! They were usually moving too fast to take a picture, but I did get this one, which I think is hysterical because of the way he’s sticking his tongue out.

There was one goat in particular who was most industrious… he got tired of waiting for the humans to feed him and decided to take matters into his own hands:

When we reluctantly left the petting zoo, Sophia wanted a pony ride. Isn’t she a cute little cowgirl?

Then it was time to ride the Ferris Wheel. (I stayed on terra firma and sent Dan on with the kids due to the fact that I am a TOTAL WIMP when it comes to carnival rides.)

After the ferris wheel, it was getting late, so we had to go look for a Whack a Mole game. Dan is an expert at this game, and wins about 95% of the time he plays. Last year at the fair he’d won a large stuffed fish (a la Nemo) for her, and she wanted Daddy to win a prize for her again this year. They played, he won, and she picked (of all things) a stuffed Rottweiller with a spiked collar. She’s named her Jackie Conchil Joey. (No, I’ve no idea where that name came from!)

And Trevor couldn’t leave the fair empty-handed, so he selected a goofy hat to add to his collection. You can’t tell in the photo, but the little gold balls light up.

All in all it was a very fun night! But whoo, let me tell you, we will be going to bed early tonight!
