Pink – “Stupid Girls”

April 6, 2006

This morning while surfing the web I stumbled across this image from Pink’s music video for her single, “Stupid Girls.” I figured it was a spoof — I’m not a fan of hers but I know enough about her to know that washing a car in scanty attire is not her normal style. I was intrigued, and decided I had to see the whole video. Found it here in a matter of minutes.

Since I’m sick to death of seeing Paris Hilton, Nicole Ritchie, Jessica Simpson, and so on, I have to say I really liked the message behind the music. Then I read up on it a little bit, thanks to an interview Dan found, and some of the things she said were right on. Take, for instance, this quote:

“I don’t think it’s a matter of men trying to keep women down any more – we’re sort of doing it to ourselves,” she says. “I don’t even think these girls are stupid, it’s just an act: be a size zero, have a certain handbag, don’t contribute to the world, just shop, don’t think. There’s not enough examples of how cool it is to be smart and healthy and not make yourself sick trying to attain society’s ideal of beautiful.”

I think that is an excellent summary of what we are seeing in the media today. Sad, but true.
