Okay folks, I’m gonna warn you right up front that this is gross.  Read at your own risk.

On New Years Eve, I came down with a sinus infection.  I’d been feeling blah for a while and when I woke up on 12/31 I knew I was getting a full fledged infection.  I’m no stranger to this sort of problem — I used to get sinus infections every 6-8 weeks before I started taking allergy shots.  They hit me fast and, if I don’t nip them in the bud, they hit me hard.

The problem was, it was New Year’s Eve.  My doctor’s office had closed early (although they didn’t think to mention that in their recorded answering message) and so had the immediate care/after hours facility.  I was doctor-less.  And although I knew I would be miserable, I just didn’t think it was critical enough for me to go to the emergency room.

So I suffered until two days later, when the doctor finally re-opened his doors for business.  Went in, saw the nurse practitioner.  She told me I had a sinus infection (duh!), prescribed antibiotics, and sent me on my merry way.

The antibiotics took over a week to really work.  I saw some relief after two days or so, but it was more like two weeks before I really felt normal again.  While in that recovery period, I did a lot of nose blowing, as you might imagine.

Well, one particular night, Dan and Trevor were playing that infernal game, and I headed back to the bedroom to go to bed.  I grabbed a tissue and blew my nose, then realized with disgust that something wet and gooey was on the bridge of my nose.

Wait a minute.  How did that get there?  Surely I didn’t blow my nose so hard that it flew up from under the tissue!

I wiped it off and blew again.  This time I felt a really odd sensation in the corner of my right eye.

Oh, no way.  Surely not!

I went in the bathroom and stood in front of the mirror.  Blew my nose again and felt that same weird sensation in my eye as I watched the hair over my eye fly upward from the breeze.

There was air coming out of my eye.  By way of my nose.

Eeeeeuuuuuwwww! (See?  I told you it was gross!)

I ran back to the den and told the guys what had happened as I Googled it.  Praise God for Google, y’all!  I just don’t know what I would do without it.  It definitely saved me from a major freak out that day!

Because, as it turns out?  It’s a relatively normal occurrence.  Leastwise, I’m not the only person it’s ever happened to.  And that made me feel a little better… but I still don’t care to repeat that experience.  Ick.

I recently enjoyed one of the perks of being over the age of 40:  a mammogram.  It’s right up there with needing bifocals, perimenopause  and colonoscopies.  Whoo hoo.

The tech called my name and introduced herself, then told me she thought that she remembered doing my mammogram the year before at their other facility.  I’m sure she said that to make me feel more comfortable, but in all honesty it just weirded me out.  Were my boobies that memorable to someone who sees them all day, every day?  Gosh, I hope not!

Anyway, I got changed in the little cubicle (which had a better selection of magazines than the entire waiting room), then headed over to the room with the giant boobie squisher.

First she told me about how this was a new, better machine because it was digital.  I said “wow” a couple of times so she would think I was impressed, but the whole time I was thinking that if we were really making advances in mammogram technology, they wouldn’t be squishing my tender parts between two flat surfaces until I felt like passing out.

She handed me two little metal studded stickers and told me to put them on the very center of my nipples.  They seemed harmless enough when I put them on (if you don’t count humiliating as harmful), but when I pulled them off?  Ouch.

Down to business:  right boobie… squish, picture, release.  Different position, squish, picture, release.  Repeat on left side.  At one point I looked at the number display that said my boobie was squished to just over 7 centimeters.  Thankfully, I don’t know metric, and I didn’t realize that it was about 2 1/2 inches.

So now that I’m done griping, I have to admit that it was over in just a few minutes.  And while it was painful enough for me to dread it every year, it is an important preventive measure.

This morning there were at least a dozen robins in my yard.

Clearly, they were either confused or lost.

Not too long ago, I applied for a Discover card because there was the promise of a $125 gift certificate at Amazon.com once you activated and used the card.

I received the Discover card, made one purchase with it, then destroyed it because (a) I don’t need more credit and (b) I don’t like Discover.

I was skeptical about the $125 gift certificate.  But it actually did come today!  So now I have to figure out what I’m going to get with it.

Comments on last week’s menu: Rachael Ray’s Pork Chops & Applesauce was tasty, but the preparation took forever.  I especially liked the applesauce because it was sweet and tangy.

Monday – 40 Garlic Clove Chicken for the Crockpot, baked potatoes, broccoli

Tuesday – Girl Scout meeting tonight.  Sophia and I are eating there.  The guys will have either leftovers or they will go out for a bite.

Wednesday – Our church cell group is having a potluck dinner. I’m taking calico beans. I really ought to share that recipe because it is fantastic and I can’t find it online anywhere.

Thursday, Thanksgiving — turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, rolls, cranberry sauce, dressing, baked pineapple, sweet potato bake, succotash, green bean casserole.  Apple pie, sweet potato pie, and ice cream for dessert.

Friday – turkey sandwiches, I’m guessing. 

Saturday – we will be visiting friends.

Sunday – leftovers or snacking.

Sophia: Mom, how did I learn what stuff tastes like?

Me: Well, God gave us these nifty things on our tongues called taste buds.  Taste is one of our five senses.

Sophia: Oh yeah!  There’s bitter, sour, sweet….

Me:  Salty.

Sophia: And there’s one called gross, right?

Me: No, I think that’s probably covered by bitter and sour.

Sophia: Well, there oughta be a gross one for pickles.

Me: I agree!

We all learned in our early years that the southern hemisphere has the opposite season from the northern hemisphere.  Right now, it’s late autumn here in the US, but in Australia, it’s late spring.

So, I’m wondering, are those folks in Australia calling this current season spring?  Or do they call it autumn?

It’s not going to keep me up at night or anything, but I DO wonder.

I went to the grocery store tonight.  Not the Wal Mart, where I do the bulk of my weekly shopping, but the regular ole high priced grocery store (or, if you prefer, supermarket).

The only things that I buy at the grocery store are the sale items.  I won’t buy anything that isn’t on sale, unless it’s something that Wal Mart doesn’t carry, or it’s an impulse buy.

Tonight my list consisted of ice cream, sodas, bottled water, shampoo, and cheese.  I had two impulse buys (thankfully, both on sale) — raspberry flavored herbal tea and a bottle of cheapo fruity sweet wine.  As I was checking out and carefully watching the monitor, the cashier said something to me.  It took me a minute to realize she had asked me something.

“I’m sorry…?” I said.

“I’ll need to see your ID.  For the wine.”

“My wha….?”  She was carding me! “Oh, bless your heart!”  I dug out my license and handed it to her.

“Oh my!  You are past the legal age.  Well, you don’t look it.”

“Thank you!” I exclaimed, and left the store with a spring in my step.  I didn’t bother pointing out that if I’d had a child when I was of legal age to buy wine, that child would now be of legal age to buy wine.

ROFL
