Works for Me Wednesday: Restaurant and Non-Grocery Coupons

November 14, 2007

One thing that can really make me want to kick myself in the behind is buying something and then realizing after the fact that I had a coupon for it. At home, of course, where it won’t do me a bit of good. Whenever this happened, it was either because (a) I had procrastinated on filing the most recently clipped grocery coupons or (b) the coupons in question were not for grocery items and had no place to call home until they were needed.

(A) was easy enough to fix — quit procrastinating! And now that I’m doing Menu Plan Monday, I know that my coupons have to be sorted and filed before I sit down to make up my shopping lists on Sunday evening. Easy peasy.

As for (B), that’s a whole different story. Pizza delivery coupons were on the fridge because that’s something you always buy at home. But what to do with fast food coupons, Michaels coupons, Kohl’s coupons, and the like?

I finally came up with a system that has worked pretty well ever since. All non-grocery coupons go in a clear craft craft envelope. That envelope gets tucked in between the seat and the center console of my car, so that I always have it with me. Any impulsive stops for a Chick-fil-A lunch or scrapbooking supplies at Michaels are covered and therefore less expensive. Yay!

  1. That is a great idea!! I am forever not using important coupons for that very reason!!

Do you have a good way of organizing your regular grocery coupons? I have mine in letter sized envelopes in a plastic shoe box but it still is a little disorganized and doesn’t really work well. I’m looking for suggestions!

  2. Great idea! I’ve been needing a solution for this problem. :)

  3. Great idea, I’m a coupon fanatic!

  4. Great idea! Right now with all the great store coupons that come out during the holidays, I’ve started keeping them in a small manila envelope in my diaper bag (but I love your plastic craft envelope idea–more durable!) Fast food coupons go in an envelope in the glove box so I can rifle through them quickly if we grab a bite while running around to use all the other coupons.

  5. Smart idea! Do you shop at CVS, btw? When I get those Extra Care Bucks coupons, I always tear them off and put them right into my wallet while sitting in the car outside the store. That way, I have them on me when I go back. I’m like you…half the coupons I wish I had while out are often left at home. Your tip is an excellent one!
