Was that a compliment? #2

September 18, 2007

This evening while Dan had taken Trevor to an appointment and I was in between dinner preparations, one of the neighborhood latchkey kids came by to see Trevor.  I told him Trevor wasn’t here, but he decided to come on in and visit anyway.  We chatted for a while about the usual things that adults discuss with children — school, teachers, homework, siblings, etc.   Sophia was chattering away with him too, telling him about all of the exciting things that she can do now that she’s five and in KINDERGARTEN.

After he’d been here about twenty minutes, he said something about, “… not as mean as Trevor says.”  I assumed he was talking about Sophia who has been overextended and crabby ever since she started school full day.  I replied with, “No, she’s not mean.  She can just be really sassy sometimes.”

Whereupon the boy looked at me and said, “No, I was talking about you.  You’re not as mean as Trevor says you are.”

I assured him that his assessment was correct and that Trevor was just biased.

Mean, indeed!   Hmph.

  1. LOL I always thought my friends’ parents were so much cooler than mine when I was a kid. I guess because other moms don’t nag their kids’ friends generally. lol
